Read the symptoms before you call

Most problems are visible from the driveway during or right after a storm:

Overflow is the one worth acting on quickly. Water spilling over the edge lands against the foundation and soaks the fascia and soffit above it, which turns a gutter problem into a carpentry problem.

• A run that dips in the middle or has pulled away from the house
• Drips or stains at a corner joint
• Water pouring over the front edge in heavy rain
• A downspout emptying right beside the foundation

When it is a repair and when it is not

An isolated sag, a pulled spike, or one bad corner is a repair. We rehang the run, correct the pitch, and seal the joint.

Two situations point to replacement instead. The first is gutters that are simply undersized for the roof feeding them, where no amount of resealing fixes the volume. The second is older sectional gutters leaking at several joints at once. Sectional gutters have a seam every ten feet, and those seams keep failing. Seamless runs are cut to length on site, so the only joints are at corners and downspouts.

Where the water ends up matters too

A gutter only moves water to the downspout. If that downspout discharges next to the slab, you have moved the problem a few feet rather than solved it. Part of any repair visit is looking at the discharge point and extending it away from the house where it needs it.
